COUNT DOWN GROOVE was a music television series created in October 1994. Like its sister program GROOVY, it originated from producer Komuro Tetsuya and label avex trax which had been promoting dance music in Japan since the late 1980s.

Every week, it featured a top 50 mainly constituted of  Western songs and a few Japanese songs. It specialized in dance/club/eurobeat, but also promoted house, R&B, reggae and hip-hop. The ranking was built on questionnaires filled by the Japanese clubs (several of them being connected to avex trax) on their most popular songs.  Apart from the ranking, episodes included a 5-7 minutes “feature” with exclusive artists’ interviews, reports on concerts at Velfarre, information related to clubs, music recommandations at Tower Records. COUNT DOWN GROOVE – later renamed CD GROOVE – was one of the rare series of the kind at this time.

Amuro Namie was a guest host for a few episodes and was the mascot of the show, regularly appearing in jingles between April and July 1995. After her, PJ&Duncan became regular guest hosts and mascots.
