Olivia Burrell is an Jamaican-Canadian singer, vocal director, lyricist and composer who works as a background singer for Japanese artists. She contributed to Amuro Namies’s 2015 song Birthday, but also took the vocal direction of several songs on Finally.
Her collaborations include AI, Hamasaki Ayumi, Ito Yuna, JUJU, K., Kato Miliyah, Koda Kumi, KOME KOME Club, Kubota Toshinobu, Nakamori Akina, Nakashima Mika, Nishino Kana, Perfume, PUSHIM and many more.
In November 2018, she commented on her collaboration on Finally on instagram: “I was asked to not only assist with the recording of the backing vocals, but to put together a team of foreign singers and do the vocal direction for 8 songs! (…) This was definitely a big challenge as the specific request was to make the new recordings sound almost identical to the originals. I asked my senpai’s Kaleb and Tahirih to help out as I thought that their voices most suited the task at hand, and I am so glad I did! We had no charts, no isolated vocal data, no lyrics… we found other vocal tracks embedded in the songs that we couldn’t decipher until we got into the recording booth… It was certainly a challenge! We did it though, and I am so pleased with the results! More importantly I am so graful for the opportunity. I don’t have a degree from a music school (though I often wish I did!), or any formal training other than what I have learned from my wonderful music teachers in junior high and high school. So to be asked to do big projects like this by companies who have put their trust in me, means everything to me. Thank you.”
