Amuro Namie’s Role
Amuro Namie co-hosts the show with Bro.TOM (Brother Tom ;ブラザー・トム ; real name: Koyanagi Tomu ; Thomas Akiona Akima Junior), a Japanese singer, talent and music producer born in Hawaii.
In a 1995 documentary dedicated to Amuro Namie in Okinawa, Bro.TOM surprises and supports her at the moment she receives her high school diploma.
Incidentally, Bro.TOM has also hosted Ponkickies from 1999 to 2001 and in 2005.
GROOVY
GROOVY is a short music and variety television series that serves the promotion of Roppongi Velfarre, a Tokyo nightclub created by music producer Komuro Tetsuya and label avex trax in December 1994. It was then the biggest disco in Asia. Velfarre hosted many international DJs and permitted the release of several mix CDs compilations. It closed its doors in 2007.
Almost every episode of GROOVY take place in the nightclub and the opening titles show both the inside and the outside of Velfarre. The first episodes are dedicated to the discovery of the place.
In most episodes, Amuro Namie and Bro.TOM interview guests: mostly artists and talents, but also various entertainers. There are notable appearances by British reggae singer C.J Lewis, American scat singer John Scatman as well as singer Fuji Keiko and producer Utada Terazune.
Former SUPER MONKEY’S, MAX, also appear twice to promote their first single Koisuru Velfarre Dance ~Saturday Night~, a cover of Whigfield’s Saturday Night, that was originally recorded for promoting the Velfarre club.
Amuro Namie promotes her own releases in the show. So does Bro.TOM who introduces Hisamoto Masami’s single Namida no kawa which he produced and his band The Bubble Gum Brothers.
Several episodes are dedicated to “Amuro’s DJ School”. They show Amuro Namie taking DJ lessons from Ujita Minoru. This part of the series was promoting the presence of DJs in Roppongi Velfarre, but also responded to one of Amuro’s wishes: fearing that her career as a singer would not last for long, she was eager to learn new skills such as playing the battery or learning how to become a DJ as an alternative.
The 39th and final episode celebrates Amuro Namie’s 18th birthday.
