Michael Thompson (1954- ) is an American guitarist and songwriter based in California. He attended Berklee College of Music before joining The Ellis Hall Group, and then pursued his career as a live and studio musician for international artists. He notably played the guitar for the TV series Fame, Miami Vice, Melrose Place and worked on worked on film scores by directors Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard and Randy Edelman. He also formed The Michael Thompson Band in 1988.

His collaborations include Joe Cocker, Cher, Céline Dion, Andy Fraser, Whitney Houston, Babyface, Eric Clapton, Quincy Jones, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, En Vogue, the Scorpions, ‘N Sync, Toni Braxton, Phil Collins, Rod Stewart, Joe Sample, Vince Neil, Christina Aguilera, Bette Midler, Gloria Estefan, Stanley Clarke, Ricky Martin, Anita Baker, Matsutoya Yumi, Monica, Savage Garden, Yazawa Eikichi, Shania Twain, Ray Charles, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Barbara Streisand, Patti LaBelle, Bonnie Tyler, Ringo Starr, Barry Manilow, Jennifer Lopez, Boyz II Men and many others.
