How do you feel about your 20-year music career?

I did not expect to be able to continue singing for 20 years. I am personally surprised by the fact and thanks to my fans and staff who helped me come so far in 20 years. I think this year, I have a wonderful 20th anniversary.

Any ups and downs in your career?

I think I have many good times even now I think it is a good time for me. Maybe there were bad times but I wasn’t bothered by them.

How have your changed over the years?

I think I have different perspectives on my job. I have had many valuable experiences. How should I say? I wonder how I have changed. There are still many things that I have not tried. Every year I reflect and wonder how I do get better. So there are still manny things that I can continue to learn and do better.

A love for anime?

Yes, I do read comics and I watch anime. My personal favourite is One Piece. When I had the opportunity to sing the theme song for One Piece, I was really happy.

How do you always present your best in front of your audience?

Of course there were times when I was really not at my best. I think I can only give the best that I can offer each day. (laughs) Everyday I am working very hard.

Would you want to groom new comers?

I really don’t know how long I can continue to sing and dance, and hold concerts. But I really like to try to do this for one or two more years, as long as I can. So when I retire, just like the way I was nurtured, I would really like to mentor new singers as well.

Namie Amuro in the spotlight VS in private

I am totally different from my public persona (when in private). Probably on stage you may feel that I am a glittering star. But in private, I am just like any of you, just watching TV and going to concerts of other stars.

Inspirations in your music career…

Before my debut, I watched videos and listened to songs of Janet Jackson. I was very impressed by how she could sing and dance on a stylish stage. I think I could learn from her and do so myself. I am very happy. If I had not encountered her, probably I would have not been able to do it (be at this stage today).
